Summary regarding trauma informed care:
I discovered the principles around trauma informed care 5 years ago, and recognized these principles as a valuable metacognitive approach to many of the practices that I had personally found successful. Since that time, I have consciously used this approach in my own practice and in the teaching and programmatic work in which I am involved regarding LGBTQ health care. We are trying to incorporate these principles into the UW Medicine Transgender and Gender Non-Binary Health Program.

KCAFP Fall Member Meeting Panel
'How to be Anti-Racist in Medicine'
In June, the KCAFP Board of Directors committed to a year of advocacy. With all the pressing issues facing family physicians in 2020, we decided to make anti-racism the topic for our Fall Member Meeting held virtually on Thursday, November 5th. A BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) led task force met in July to discuss how we wanted to approach this topic. We decided to commit to offer our members actionable tools when it comes to the complex topic of racism by soliciting stories of racism in our practices and having a panel of experts walk through real life incidents. 82 people were able to sign in to our Zoom Webinar for a 90 minute panel discussion. The panel was moderated by KCAFP President Sonal Patel, MD. Below are the panelists that helped us explore racism in medicine:
Leticia Nieto, PSY.D., LMFT., T.E.P.Dr. Nieto has worked for over three decades as an educator and counselor. She teaches for the MA in Counseling program at St. Martin's University. Her book, Beyond Inclusion, Beyond Empowerment, analyzes psychological dynamics of privilege and oppression with ways to develop skills and promote social justice.

Her approach to organizational change focuses on addressing both the institutional infrastructure to support equitable shifts and supporting staff as they manage the impact of change on individuals. This requires building shared understanding and collective action to embody values in policy and programs (what we do), and practice (how we do it). Kyana's work involves keynotes, presentations, trainings, and organizational change efforts that promote racial equity & social justice for government, nonprofits and educational institutions across the US.
