Underserved Pathway Mentors Needed!
The Underserved Pathway is a co-curricular program at UW School of Medicine that aims to address physician shortages in underserved communities by supporting medical students who are interested in caring for underserved populations. The Pathway engages students in three educational avenues: longitudinal mentoring, a foundation of knowledge, and a variety of real-world experiences.
Why is mentorship impactful?
The mentorship program is a longitudinal relationship to help support students’ commitment to a career caring for underserved populations. Mentoring provides students the opportunity to learn from an experienced role model who can field questions, discuss residency and career plans, and support them in their education while maintaining focus on each student’s commitment to the underserved. Working with a mentor provides students early and consistent exposure to professionals who can offer valuable insights into what it is like to care for underserved populations.
Who are Underserved Pathway mentors?
Underserved Pathway mentors are healthcare professionals from across the region who are involved in the care of underserved populations in a variety of capacities. Most UP mentors primarily care for underserved patients or are from a group historically underrepresented in medicine. See here for the complete list of qualifying criteria.
What is the commitment like for mentors?
Mentorship is a requirement for all students in the Underserved Pathway. Students have a conversation with their mentor at least once a quarter until they graduate. Meetings can be in-person or via phone, video chat, or email.
You can learn more about the Underserved Pathway on the UP website and learn more about mentoring on the UP mentor page.
If you are interested in being an Underserved Pathway mentor, please complete our New UP Mentor form. We will refer potential mentees that we think would make a good fit to contact you directly to set up an initial chat. Please know that you are never obligated to accept a new mentee.
